چکیده

Formulas are derived for the probability density function and the probability distribution function of the largest canonical angle between two p-dimensional subspaces of Rn chosen from the uniform distribution on the Grassmann manifold (which is the unique distribution invariant by orthogonal transformations of Rn). The formulas involve the gamma function and the hypergeometric function of a matrix argument. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. AMS classification: 15A51; 15A52; 33C05; 33C45; 62H10

A linear discriminant analysis framework based on random subspace for face recognition

Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) often suffers from the small sample size problem when dealing with high dimensional face data. Random subspace can effectively solve this problem by random sampling on face features. However, it remains a problem how to construct an optimal random subspace for discriminant analysis and perform the most efficient discriminant analysis on the constructed random ...

Learning over Sets using Boosted Manifold Principal Angles (BoMPA)

In this paper we address the problem of classifying vector sets. We motivate and introduce a novel method based on comparisons between corresponding vector subspaces. In particular, there are two main areas of novelty: (i) we extend the concept of principal angles between linear subspaces to manifolds with arbitrary nonlinearities; (ii) it is demonstrated how boosting can be used for applicatio...

Tangent Space Estimation for Smooth Embeddings of Riemannian Manifolds

Numerous dimensionality reduction problems in data analysis involve the recovery of lowdimensional models or the learning of manifolds underlying sets of data. Many manifold learning methods require the estimation of the tangent space of the manifold at a point from locally available data samples. Local sampling conditions such as (i) the size of the neighborhood (sampling width) and (ii) the n...

Transformations on the set of all n-dimensional subspaces of a Hilbert space preserving principal angles

Wigner’s classical theorem on symmetry transformations plays a fundamental role in quantum mechanics. It can be formulated, for example, in the following way: Every bijective transformation on the set L of all 1-dimensional subspaces of a Hilbert space H which preserves the angle between the elements of L is induced by either a unitary or an antiunitary operator on H . The aim of this paper is ...
